The COMET experiment, which searches for the lepton-flavor-violating muon-to-electron conversion process, is under preparation in the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. To provide a high-intensity muon beam to the experiment, pions produced from the collision of 8 GeV protons from the Main Ring with a graphite target are collected using a superconducting pion capture solenoid. It is necessary to install a massive radiation shield inside the capture solenoid to protect the coils from the quench as well as radiation damage. The main shield materials are decided to be stainless steel and copper with a thickness of 420 mm with a total weight of 13 t. The shield is designed as a part of a complex vacuum system and together with peripheral equipment, it forms a high-power targetry and beam interception system. The whole system is designed to be exchangeable with semi-remote handling after Phase-I of COMET, at which the components will be highly radio-activated.
